Mangubat eyes regional belt

UNBEATEN Tomjune Mangubat finally gets his shot at a regional belt as he faces off with Arnel Baconaje for the vacant World Boxing Council (WBC) Asian Boxing Council (ABC) Silver featherweight title on April 5 at the Parkmall rotunda.

The 21-year-old Mangubat has been very impressive in his career and has defeated Marvin Tampus, Crisanto Contemprato and Boyce Sultan. Though his last fight ended in a split draw with Venson Delopere, Omega Pro Sports International (Opsi) has huge plans for him.

“After that, hopefully he will get a slot in the undercard of a Manny Pacquiao fight,” said Opsi vice president Jerome Calatrava.

The 25-year-old Baconaje won his last two fights against Dadoy Cabintoy and Danny Tampipi by knockouts. Mangubat is 10-0-1 with nine knockouts, while Baconaje is 10-3 with eight knockouts.

Mark Vicelles (9-0-1, 5 KOs) slugs it out with former International Boxing Federation Youth flyweight champion Robert Onggocan (11-4, 7 KOs) for the vacant VisProBA flyweight belt.

In the undercard, Ponciano Remandiman (9-4-1, 5 KOs) takes on Renz Rosia (14-7-1, 7 KOs) for the VisProBA flyweight title, while Pete Apolinar (9-1, 6 KOs) is up against Danny Tampipi (8-9-2, 5 KOs) in an eight-rounder. (EKA)
