City library recognized

THE Cebu City Public Library was recognized as among the top performing public libraries in the Philippines in providing services to the public.

Chief Librarian Rosario Chua accepted the recognition given by the National Library of the Philippines (NLP) and the Asia Foundation on Thursday, March 21.

The Cebu City Public Library was recognized by its outstanding performance by extending the library services to 103,528 persons in 2018 and by being the first 24/7 public library in the country.

The recognition is given to public libraries that are well-maintained and serve their purpose to a higher number of clients.

Last year, Mayor Tomas Osmeña ordered opening the public library 24 hours a day, seven days a week in response to the request of a student, Mitch Roldan, for an affordable place to go to study instead of going to coffee shops.

As of March 9, or exactly a year after the City allowed the 24/7 operation, the public library has served 132,089 clients, said Chua. In 2017, the library served 26,671 clients, she said.

Aside from converting other spaces at the Rizal Public Museum where the public library is, the City has also implemented several improvement to make sure it can cater to the number of students who study there. (RVC)
