BAGUIO City boxers added four more gold medals but the city remains in second place going into the final day of the Batang Pinoy Luzon Leg in Ilagan City, Isabela.
Striking four golds were Kates Gacad (junior girls’ light flyweight), Sarah Garwageo (junior girls’ fly), Liezel Chavez (junior girls’ bantam) and Jamie Talewan, Jr. (junior boys’ bantam).
Laguna Province continued its dominance in athletics with two more golds in the final day of the meet at the City of Ilagan Sports Complex to finish on top of the medal tally with 38 golds, 35 silvers and 36 bronze medals.
Baguio City dropped to second with 36-47-60 followed by Quezon City (24-19-11), Pangasinan Province (23-24-26) and Pasig City (22-24-27).
Magvrylle Chrause Matchino anchored Laguna’s girls’ 4x400m relay team to victory to claim her third gold medal yesterday at the close of the Luzon Leg of the 2019 Philippine National Youth Games-Batang Pinoy at the City of Ilagan Sports Complex here.
Matchino, 14, and her team of Janine Dauba, Evita Ruth Belloso and Kyla Elona clocked four minutes and 17 seconds to beat a field that included Pangasinan’s Jasmin Padaoang, Jessica Villar, Shinna Benavente and Ana Marie Eugenio and Ilagan’s Margie Panaligan, Jaimaica Tadeo, Carla Mae Sadia and Rebecca Vinuya, who timed in 4:18.2 and 4:21.8 for the silver and bronze, respectively.
It was the third mint for Matchino after she also topped the 2000m steeplechase and led the 4x100m relay squad to gold to join Calamba’s Erica Marie Ruto and Pangasinan’s Rufo Aidan Raguine in centerpiece athletics’ elite group of triple-gold medalists.
Matchino was denied a fourth gold in the 800m by Camarines Sur’s Lheslie de Lima, who topped the event with a clocking of 2:19.2 as against the latter’s 2:21.7.
It was De Lima’s second mint being the 1500m winner.
Antipolo City went undefeated in girls’ volleyball to snatch the gold medal.
Antipolo City, represented by California Academy and mentored by school owner Dr. Obet Vital, downed Caloocan, 25-17, 25-20, in the finals to give Antipolo City its first gold in this weeklong competition organized by the PSC for in-school and out-of-school children aged 15 and below.
Mariveles took the last ticket to Bacolod City after downing Angeles City, 25-14, 25-23, for the bronze medal.
In beach volleyball, the Angeles City pair of Jenaila de Guzman and Keith Leanne Arceo powered Angeles City to a 21-18, 21-17 win over Mandaluyong City to win the gold medal.
Pangasinan Province, represented by Milson Janry Galzote and Jayvee Perlasan, beat Olongapo City, 21-15, 22-20, in the gold medal match of boys beach volleyball. Mandaluyong took the bronze.
