‘This order? This order? Disorder!’ A little ‘Endgame’ predicament

WE ARE a family of seven: Dad, Mom and five not-so-toxic males. And as all families are different in their own ways, we also have our own mix going on.

The father is proud of his southern roots. Lolo was quite the survivor. The classic rags-to-riches, self-made man who left a mark in the town of Lilo-an, Cebu. The mother, though spending majority of her adult life in Cebu, actually traces her roots from the north. The “A” in my name stands for Arevalo. And for some reason, the Arevalos are very, very gifted especially in music. Switchfoot’s guitarist and keyboard player is an Arevalo.

So, the five not-so-toxic boys, born and raised in Cebu, find themselves gleaning from both cultures. And while the world progresses at a rapid pace, the family chooses to retain a bit of the old-school. Family meal times are a must, and movie times are part of an almost weekly routine.

Which brings me to real focus of this story.

“The Avengers: Endgame” is coming out next month, and the five not-so-toxic brothers are planning on a little MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) movie marathon to ensure the maximum emotional impact when we see the 22nd film of the MCU’s “Infinity Saga.”

On that note, there was much debate on how to watch these films order-wise. Do we go chronological, according to story timeline, starting from World War II in “Captain America: The First Avenger”? Or do we follow the order according to film release dates and start instead with the explosive “Iron Man” released in 2008?

“I think we should just follow the tips on the internet, and follow the story timeline,” said number four, reiterating that Marvel geeks online would know best.

And so story timeline we went, and we reviewed Captain America’s origin story. As this order suggests, we should be watching “Captain Marvel” next. But that film, which follows the story of Carol Danvers in the mid-’90s, is still screening in cinemas. So we proceeded with “Iron Man.”

“’Star Wars,”’ number five said, right after the second film. “We don’t watch ‘Star Wars’ like 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 right? It feels best as 4, 5, 6, 1, 2, 3.”

I agreed. I explained that producers are forced to craft better films than the ones that preceded them. Therefore, if you follow the order of film release dates, you’re set to be more yawn-proof. The post-credits scenes work better as well, weaving one movie seamlessly with the next one.

If you ask me, I’d encourage you to start with “Iron Man” following the release dates. Then if somehow you’ve managed to watch all 21 films already, and still have time for another round, then you can try the story timeline order, starting off with “Captain America: The First Avenger.”
