Local bookshop opens new store

INDEPENDENT bookstore, Mt. Cloud has moved into a bigger location to cater to the growing number of booklovers.

Padma Perez said the new space at Yangco Road (near Brent School) is meant to give space for more activities, celebrating their 9th year with a chance of ambiance.

Perez added the new space is big enough to become a creative hub which can accommodate small conferences, bigger groups for poetry readings, workshops, science fairs, pop-up shops Sunday organic markets.

“It will be a space for artists to try out their ideas,” Perez said.

Perez added in celebration of their new location and ninth year, the shop will be hosting the Baguio Crafts Fair with over 50 artisans joining to display and sell their work slated on April 13 to 14.

Perez said the nine years of the bookshop has seen its ups and downs and relays on their third year, the idea to close shop was considered.

However, the resolve to continue prevailed, armed with the dream to set up a bookshop in Baguio City.

Mt. Cloud opened with Candy Gourlay’s author’s talk on her young adult novel, Bone Talk, shortlisted for the prestigious Carnegie Medal this year.

The novel is set in Bontoc town in Mt. Province in 1899 and is about Samkad.

Samkad thinks he knows everything he needs to know about the world. He knows where home is. He knows who his friends and his enemies are. And he knows that he wants to become a man, to have his own shield, spear and axe and to take his place with the warriors of his village. But everything changes when a new boy arrives in the village who brings news of strangers called “Americans”, who are bringing war and death to his home.
