PDP-Laban bets agree 3-year term too short for village officials

SOME senatorial candidates are pushing for the Magna Carta for barangay officials and are open for the extension of their terms of service to more than three years so they can better serve their respective constituents.

Senatorial bets Imee Marcos, Koko Pimentel and JV Ejercito over the weekend said they favor the extension of terms of service of elected barangay officials because a three-year term is very short.

The three were in Cagayan de Oro City on Sunday, March 25, together with other senatoriables under the Partido Demokratiko Pilpino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) for the campaign rally at a university in the City.

Marcos said extending the term of service for barangay leaders must be thoroughly discussed.

“I think they discussed up to five years it’s up to them. I agree three year term is ridiculously short kasi first year bago pa, learning how to read the budget pa, learning how the bureaucracy works. Sa second year, medyo may alam na and third year mangangampanya na naman so parang isang taon lang ang trabaho siguro at least 4 years will probably be more reasonable period of time,” Marcos said.

Pimentel also said extending the terms of service of barangay officials is possible and he will support bills for said purpose.

“Maayo kana proposal kay ang present crop of barangay officials kani sila are elected sama sa uban pero term nila two years lang not because of their fault but because congress wanted a synchronized election pero para patas we should give them the usual 3-year term,” Pimentel said.

“Posible gyud ma-extend ang term sa barangay officials kay dili man sila governed by the constitution, they are governed by law so open ako dyan kasi two years is too short and unfair sa ila,” he added.

For his part, Ejercito also said giving the barangay officials more years to serve the people is just right to give them more time to be productive and efficient.

“At least four years will be ideal kasi three years is short para mas productive sila,” he said.

On the other hand, Pimentel also proposed for the passage of the Magna Carta for the barangay to make village officials as regular government employees.

Pimentel said once it is pushed through, salaries of village officials will be similar with regular government workers who are also covered with GSIS and other benefits.

“Proposal pa kini ni Tatay Nene 12 years ago nga medyo dili pa ma-afford sa gobyerno pero karon 2019 naman so murag kaya na,” Pimentel said.

Marcos also said the Magna Carta is important for barangay officials being the frontliners.

“It’s important. Ang problema sa barangay ang tagal-tagal nagisilbi ang ending pag-nagkasakit or naaksidente walang pambayad walang retirement, walang insurance at pension. Ang pinaglalaban namin na at least ma-pareho sila sa permanent employees ng gobyerno,” Marcos said.
