THE Baguio Water District (BWD) opened Tuesday its new building at the PNR compound in Baguio City to cater to the growing needs of consumers.

In simple rites Tuesday, March 26, BWD general manager Salvador Royeca said the P80-million four-story structure was completed in two years since its groundbreaking.

Baguio Mayor Maurico Domogan with Local Water Utilities Administration (LWUA) administrator Jeci Lapus were with the BWD and employees for the opening of the building, described to be built as a pure BWD venture, void of any loans.

Royeca said the old building could no longer cater to the needs of the consumers and the 300 strong employees pushing the BWD board to push for the new structure.

Last year, the BWD finished rehabilitation and upgrade of the two-hectare Mount Sto. Tomas rain catchment basin in a bid to maximize its water holding capacity that will translate to sustainable water supply for over 30 percent of consumers in southern and central Baguio City and some parts of nearby Tuba, Benguet.

It was in 1975 when the city government created the BWD, inheriting an aging water system from the defunct Department of Public Services (DPS).

The city’s water distributor presently operates 57 deep wells which supplies the 61,727 cubic meters of water required daily by its 317,200 consumers.

The water district is able to produce over 77,000 cubic meters of water from its various sources during the rainy season and as low as 42,500 cubic meters during the summer months.
