Anti–counterfeit law pushed in Baguio

YOUTH representative and Councilor Levy Lloyd Orcales is set to propose a measure to require all commercial and institutional establishments in Baguio City to install and use counterfeit money detectors.

“The installation and the use of counterfeit money detector is a readily available equipment that can guard our transactions and the general public from possession and use of counterfeit notes,” Orcales said.

The youth leader said the measure is intended primarily for commercial and institutional establishments in the city to be able to verify the authenticity of bank notes as accepted for any transaction and that such counterfeit bank notes can be immediately turned over to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) for their appropriate action and disposal.

The proposed ordinance is in support of the current campaign of the BSP against the proliferation of counterfeit bank notes and coins whereby maintaining the integrity of commercial and institutional establishments of the City of Baguio and at the same time protecting the general public of possible charges as they may unknowingly use such counterfeit notes and coins.

The proposed measure “Currency Integrity Ordinance of the Baguio City,” will be applied and informed to all establishments by the City Permits and Licensing Division within 60 days if it is approved.

Orcales said President Rodrigo Duterte himself urged the BSP more intensive programs against counterfeiting be conducted in order protect the public from confusion and deceit and appealed to the public to use the country’s currencies wisely and responsibly for the country’s advancement.

The new ordinance is scheduled to be filed in next week’s regular council session.
