‘League of Legends’ helps graduate top batch

A COMPUTER gamer topped this year’s batch of graduates from the Bacolod City College (BCC), who received their degrees during the 19th Commencement Exercises at the SMX Convention Center Wednesday afternoon, March 27.

Nico Valera, 20, who obtained a degree in Bachelor of Secondary Education major in mathematics, was one of the magna cum laude recipients of Class 2019.

The two other magna cum laude graduates were Honey Grace Harder and Ronela Mocon. They also obtained a degree in Bachelor of Secondary Education major in mathematics.

This year, BCC has a total of 878 graduates.

Valera said he was very grateful that he topped this year’s batch and was chosen as speaker on behalf of his fellow graduates.

“I’m happy because it’s my first time to achieve this (being at the top of the class). Despite the fact that I’m a computer gamer, I still came out on top in the batch because I know how to manage my time and studies,” he said.

Valera revealed that he plays “League of Legends,” which always inspires him to aim for the highest rank.

“I dedicate my achievement to my parents who are always there to support my studies. I’m not here if not because of them,” Valera said.

He said her mother works as utility worker at the Bacolod Government Center while his father is a welder.

After graduation, Valera will focus on the board examination.

BCC Administrator Ma. Johanna Bayoneta said the city now has 878 new graduates. BCC also has its first graduates of the K-12 program since its implementation four years ago.

BCC has already produced 10,056 graduates.

Mayor Evelio Leonardia, who founded the City Government-run BCC in 1997 during his first term as mayor, said that in terms of performance and records, BCC has the highest passing percentage in the teacher’s board.

“Among the schools in Bacolod and Negros Occidental, this (BCC) is one of the top schools. If they hold a BCC diploma, it is also good as the other so-called Class A schools in Bacolod or in the whole country,” he said.

The mayor also shared that the construction of additional school building at BCC is a big help to the students.

The BCC’s site development and facilities worth P350 million is one of the priority projects of the city, which will be funded by the P1.7 billion loan from the Development Bank of the Philippines.

Since Leonardia founded BCC in 1997, the tuition has always been P30 per unit.

Also present during the graduation ceremony were First Lady Elsa Leonardia, Representative Greg Gasayata, Vice Mayor El Cid Familiaran and Councilor Renecito Novero. (MAP)
