THE campaign period for local positions in the upcoming May 13 elections officially kicks off Friday, March 29.

Under the Omnibus Election Code, the campaign period will last for 45 days until May 11, two days before the 2019 National and Local elections. Campaigning, however, is not allowed on Maundy Thursday (April 18) and Good Friday (April 19).

Records of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) Pampanga show that almost 100 candidates are vying for different positions in the province, district representatives, cities and municipalities.

Comelec Pampanga Provincial Officer Fernando Cot-om said the onset of the campaign season also marks the agency’s official implementation of rules and regulations for the election.

He reminded the candidates to be mindful of the said rules and regulations for campaigning including the proper posting and the sizes of tarpaulins, posters and other campaign paraphernalia.

Cot-om also reminded candidates that the Comelec will be strictly monitoring the activities of candidates, especially during their caucus, to ensure that any form of vote-buying will not slip through during the 45-day campaign period and until the rest of the election season.

He stressed that the Comelec will not hesitate to disqualify any candidate who will fail to comply with election laws, even after they were elected by the people.

“Comelec has the power to disqualify whoever candidates and we are ready to exercise that power if it is proven that they violated election rules and regulations,” he said.
