Provincial vet eyes breeding centers for black pigs

THE Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) in Negros Occidental has crafted measures to boost black pig production in the province.

Provincial Veterinarian Renante Decena Thursday, March 28, said the provincial government envisions to establish and augment breeding centers using black pig boars and sows in strategic locations.

This will be in partnership with concerned local government units (LGUs) or private entity serving as black pig multiplier cooperator.

Decena said PVO plans to build up the breeding base of black pigs in suitable production areas through dispersal of boars and gilts utilizing existing backyard swine raisers associations as initial recipients.

“We will strengthen the provision of technical and veterinary services through our District Veterinary Field Units,” he said, adding that PVO will give special attention to black pig farming in a practical and natural way.

PVO earlier said it is promoting the production of Negros black pigs as a new area of investment.

The measure is positioned to generate business, employment and livelihood for Negrenses especially those in rural areas.

In order to realize this goal, PVO will also assist livestock auction markets in improving their operational system by providing weighing scales, holding pens, corals and other facilities.

The province will organize Black Pigs Association to cater their technical needs and upgrade their marketing capabilities, it added.
