Revisiting the DepEd Digital Movement

FAST changes in technology is an inevitable reality that affects all walks of profession and workforces around the world. Being an educator, embracing to this change is a tough responsibility that would need both passion and commitment.

To keep up with the changes in digital technology, the Department of Education in the Philippines has created the five-year information and communication technology for education (DepED ICT4E) Strategic Plan.

This will steer the teaching and learning process to the global standards of education.

As a result, the Filipino teachers are making steps to effectively deliver the curriculum with the ICT integration. They use some recorded audio and video for their lessons, in crafting differentiated activities, and even in assessments.

To my personal experience, I even created computer-assisted instruction with the Microsoft PowerPoint facilities to supplement learning.

However, there are some gaps that need to be met. Some teachers, especially those “digital aliens”, find it a burden to acquire the technological skill. The novice teachers, on the other end, do not know how to effectively use technology to their teaching.

Meanwhile, there are factors that limit a digital classrom’s function like insufficient number of facilities including computer units, the unstable internet connection, and the lack of teachers’ skills and knowledge on the proper use of technology.

Yet, these basic considerations are gradually addressed by the department through its DepED Computerization Program, CyberExpo Conferences, and close partnership with other digital providers worldwide and most especially the birth of the Learning Resource portal.

However, teachers’ still have a huge role to play despite the emergence of a digital classroom. The new classroom still needs the initiative and resourcefulness of the teachers for the students to learn.

It also entails love to schoolchildren as the teachers are the frontline of the teaching and learning process. (Mark Fil L. Tagsip, teacher at DepEd Division of Davao Oriental)
