Army: Local peace talks continue

AN OFFICIAL of the 4th Infantry Division’s 403rd Brigade said the termination of peace talks won’t affect the localized peace talks happening in the communities.

Colonel Edgardo de Leon, 403rd Brigade commander said, the local chief executives and barangay officials themselves are the ones pursuing peace initiatives. And unlike the “national level peace talks”, the local negotiations are more fast and giving better results.

“Yung local ang bilis, may kapitan na sinasabi na may gustong mag-surrender, kinabukasan, surrender na agad. The peace benefits assistance available din agad,” he said.

(Local talks are faster, there’s a barangay captain who said that there are rebels who wish to surrender the next day, and so they surrendered immediately. The peace benefits assistance are already available)

“Wala pong epekto sa kapayapaan ang termination of peace talks, the President knows it, lalo pang bibilis yung implementation ng localized peace talks,” de Leon added.

(There’s no effect on peace in the termination of peace talks, the President knows it, and it would speed up the implementation of localized peace talks instead)

De Leon also claimed that Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) founder Joma Sison is losing support from the NPA units in the grounds because of the failed promises.

President Rodrigo Duterte has decided to permanently terminate the peace talks saying talking with the communists is “useless.”

Duterte said achieving a lasting peace might now be a dream.

“Ang NPA (New People’s Army), ako na’y ni-surrender (I am the one who surrendered). I said I will stop talking to them because it is really useless. We have been talking for the last 30 years. And they have been trying to destroy the legitimate government since 53 years ago,” he said.

“It could be a dream nga naa pay pag-asa (It could only be a dream to have some hope). Fifty-three years would tell you that it amounts to nothing,” Duterte added.
