I AM writing to implore your intervention in stopping the construction of Globe Telecom’s cell tower in my neighborhood in Saavedra, Moalboal, Cebu, Philippines. This opposition is based on the following reasons:
The proposed tower is in the middle of my neighborhood with around 200 residents in the area being the barrio proper. Located within a few steps from the proposed site of the tower are the school (Saavedra Elementary School) with around 600 students and teachers and the chapel of San Isidro.
Saavedra Elementary School enrolls children from K to Grade Six, and barrio folks congregate at our chapel of San Isidro. Additionally, within a few steps are plenty of residents surrounding the school including our house which is located just right next to the proposed site of the cell tower.
For health reasons, we strongly opposed the continuance of the cell tower.
As resident of the area, I am deeply alarmed by the long-term health hazards of this proposed cell tower near us, the children and possibly the natural habitat. Several studies and organizations have conducted research and linked radiation from cell towers to cancer and other health issues.
There was no proper dissemination or consultation done by the local authorities regarding this project.
There were some talks about the construction of a cell tower. Folks around the area strongly voiced out their objections, but it looked like their voices were ignored because Globe Telecom people just showed up in the area and started digging and when asked about it, they said, they already have a mayor’s permit to proceed with the project.
Residents nearby did not give any written consent of non-objection to the construction of this cell tower in my neighborhood which is one of the requirements in the guidelines of the Housing and Land Use Regulatory Board.
As a concerned resident and on behalf of the people of Saavedra, Moalboal, Cebu, I am seeking your assistance to intervene so this construction of a cell tower in our neighborhood will be stopped.
