Emergency alley eyed in fire-prone areas

THE Iloilo City Government is planning to require all barangays in the metropolis identified as fire-prone areas to establish an alley intended for fire responders.

Mayor Jose Espinosa III said he will tap the City Engineer’s Office for the engineering design of the alley and the Task Force on Anti-Squatting and Illegal Structures to clear the area.

Due to the number of fire incidents that occurred in the city, there were several difficulties that the firemen encountered. One of the main problem is the accessibility of fire trucks in the barangays.

“This fire alley should not be obstructed so that our responders can easily penetrate the area during disaster,” Espinosa said.

Bureau of Fire Protection Iloilo City operations chief Senior Fire Officer 3 Aquilino Sampiano welcomed Espinosa’s plan to establish fire alleys.

“Based on our observations, we could not enter the alley of some barangays because of parked vehicles. Putting up fire alley will be a big help to firefighters,” Sampiano said.

Another plan of the City Government is to install pipes in narrow areas to be used by firemen in case of fire incidents. Espinosa said they also need to enhance the alarm system of barangays.

“I-identify ang most hazardous area sang barangay then we will see to it nga biskan gab-i wala sang may makaparking dira, wala sang obstruction dira nga ang size sang aton nga mga fire truck, makasulod asta sa sulod,” he added.

Espinosa advised the public to avoid parking vehicles in fire-prone areas.

The City, meanwhile, plans to implement anti-parking rule in barangays.
