Quijano: Is the Mcgregor retirement real (this time)?

LAST week, MMA’s resident notorious superstar Conor McGregor tweeted out his retirement on social media. What caught many off guard was the nonchalant, cavalier approach to such an important decision to be made.

But for those familiar with his antics, this is actually not the first time he “retired.” A few years ago, when there was a bump on the road while contract negotiations were going on, he also “retired” and tweeted out something like “thanks for the cheese.”

However, he promptly unretired after things realigned themselves more to his liking.

UFC. With the “Notorious One” there’s always something going on with him and this time, it was purportedly another botched negotiation for his next fight.

Reports came in that the UFC wanted him to headline as a co-main event with a championship boxing match. It has been no secret also that McGregor has always expressed his mad desire to own a stake in the UFC but so far he has been thwarted.

True enough, after he tweeted out his retirement, a few days later he sent out a cryptic tweet about him facing actor Mark Wahlberg (who apparently owns some shares in the UFC) in “a fight for all the shares.”

Why a multi-titled MMA superstar like him would want to fight a Hollywood actor is beyond me, but that sort of provides some perspective of what’s going on with Conor right now.

This guy is mad-obsessed about having a piece of the UFC pie and that’s his priority.

BUSINESS. McGregor has also been pretty busy with this widely successful Irish Whiskey called Proper Twelve, promoting it to the hilt. I managed to get hold of it courtesy of my SHS-B ’89 batchmate Patrick Trinidad who now calls Las Vegas home.

Me and my buddies are split on the verdict, but let’s just say, we won’t be having Proper Twelve whiskey parties anytime soon.

Just the other day, Conor expanded his business interests to include a rose wine called Champ Champ Rose which he of course announced on Twitter.

Looks like Conor has a lot on his plate already. If you didn’t know, he was on the headlines last month for being under investigation after a woman accused him of sexual assault from an incident which happened in December.

I think the retirement thing is just another ploy. It would be stupid of him to retire now, not when he is still the hottest thing in the business and the world anticipates how he will do in a rematch with Khabib Nurmagomedov.

So if he waves goodbye, just say- see you later Conor.

VERBATIM. “I think that there’s some things that Conor wants and I think that Conor wants to get together face to face, he and I, and we probably will in the next couple of weeks and we’ll get this thing figured out.”---UFC President Dana White (www.sports.yahoo.com )
