SM Malls promote zero waste, hold recycling market day

THE SM Supermalls encourage shoppers to reduce waste and earn money at the same time with its “Trash to Cash” program on April 5-6.

The event will be held in the SM City Cebu’s north covered parking area, SM Seaside City’s lower ground floor and SM City Consolacion’s open parking space.

It will start at 10 a.m. and end at 2 p.m.

The “Trash to Cash” program is an open-to-all recycling market held every first Friday and Saturday of the month in all SM Supermalls.

Families can take home cash by bringing in their trash like unused paper and cardboard, empty ink toner cartridges, plastic bottles and scraps, used lead batteries from cars, aluminum, tin cans and other discarded items.

The recycling market day is a joint project of SM Supermalls, the National Solid Waste Management Committee, Philippine Business for the Environment and other government units.

For its efforts to promote recycling, SM was recognized as the “Champion for Re-use/Recycle” by the Zero Basura Olympics during the Earth Day celebration at the SM Mall of Asia Complex in 2010.

In 2016, the People Management Association of the Philippines awarded the SM Cares with the “Tanging Bayani ng Kalikasan Award (non-government category)” for its achievement in promoting clean air and fighting climate change. It was the highest environmental management honor given by the organization.
