Benguet Crime Lab seeks space for equipment

BENGUET Crime Lab sought the assistance of legislators for space to house different equipment.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Lourdes Juan and Police Major Lord De Mesa of the Philippine National Police-Benguet Crime Laboratory reported the current condition of the crime lab during the provincial board meeting on Monday, April 1.

The two police officials also asked assistance from the provincial government to house the core competencies of the crime lab to cater swiftly to the request of local investigators from the province.

De Mesa, assistant provincial chief of Benguet Crime Lab, said the Benguet Provincial Crime Laboratory Office was activated April 15, 2015 and in the succeeding years from 2017 and 2018, the lab received 115 requests for forensic examinations.

Benguet Crime Lab have responded to incidents such as Itogon Forest fire and the Typhoon Ompong that hit Itogon in 2018.

“The PNP crime lab [Camp Crame] signified to provide the necessary equipment. The problem is we don’t have office space to house the equipment,” revealed De Mesa.

For DNA testing, he added, it takes about three months to provide the result, however, if given the chance to have new building to house the new DNA machine, it will only take a month.

Aside from DNA testing, Benguet Crime Lab also caters Medico-Legal Examination, Forensic Chemistry, Chemical Toxicology, Macro-Etching Examination, Forensic Document Analysis, Fingerprint Identification and Comparison, Ballistic Examination and Identification, Forensic Photography, Polygraph, Cartography and Composite Illustration, Scene of the Crime Operations, and Expert Testimony in Court.

The matter has been earlier elevated to the Office of Benguet Governor Crescencio Pacalso awaiting for their response. Earlier, the Benguet Highway Patrol Group, Benguet Provincial Command have also met with the august body requesting for a lot.
