RKCA chess fires on Feb. 27

THE FEBRUARY edition of the monthly Kordillyera Regional Chess Association tournament gets underway February 27 and 28 at Jacks Restaurant with more than 50 participants expected to join.

Cash prizes and trophies await the top five finishers in the Swiss format of play where they get a chance to play in the Battle of the Champions slated sometime in June, also this year.

Vice president Rogelio Garcia aid the monthly chess tournament is expecting a tougher field with more participants expected to join.

He said in addition to the monthly competitions, two battles of the champions for this year are being slated by the group.

“We will be having one battle of the champions in June and another in December so players who qualified will no longer have to wait for December,” added Garcia.

The KCA’s monthly tournament was launched last year and culminated in a “battle of champions” hosted by the municipal government of La Trinidad with Oscar Guanzon as the eventual winner.

Garcia said registration fees of P250 will be charged non-members, while members will pay only P150.

He noted that players who joined last month’s tournament will still be allowed to join the competition provided there were not among the top five finishers.

Garcia also said the tournament has now attracted the attention of high school students who are anxious to compete in the upcoming competition.

“In addition to vying for the modest prizes at stake, participants are assured of a chance to test their competitive skills under tournament conditions,” he added.

He said this is also a venue for the organization to discover new and young talents who might compete locally, at the national level and even internationally. (Roderick Osis)
