Preparing for the Spartan Race: The basics

THE Spartan Race is an exciting obstacle course event. Cebu hosted the Spartan Race last year, and will have at least one more before the year ends. Now, how does one prepare for the Spartan Race?

Endurance

You need a decent level of fitness before participating in any Spartan Race. Ideally, one should be able to run 10 kilometers non-stop as a base. This allows you to have an easy time running so you can focus on the obstacles. Running three times a week in preparation for July’s event is a good place to start.

Upper body strength/endurance

There are a lot of tasks during the Spartan Race that will require upper body strength, especially in pulling and carrying objects. Drills on the monkey bar, plenty of pull-ups and chin-ups might really help your cause. Roundup your upper body work by doing push-ups.

Unleash the inner ninja

One must learn how to climb different obstacles, crawl and be comfortable in moving in a variety of ways. Having good flexibility, combined with movement skills, will help you enjoy your first obstacle course race. Improving flexibility and movement skills by training these qualities will definitely be helpful.

Strength and resilience

Get stronger and make sure your injuries are patched up before you prepare for obstacle course racing. It’s fun, yes. But take care of your body so you can train for the long-haul.

Find a good coach

Obstacle Course Cebu is a training facility dedicated to obstacle course racing and has professional coaches well-versed with the challenges.

Here’s a photo of Sherwin Managil, one of Cebu’s best endurance sports coaches. He is now representing Cebu in various obstacle course races around the country.

A week ago, he beat members of the obstacle course national team in an event in Manila that serves as qualifier for the Southeast Asian Games. We support him in this new challenge.
