THROUGH the years, the Sacred Heart School for Boys Batch 1985 Foundation Inc. has been promoting Cebuano beauty, talent and culture through “Artabang,” a benefit art auction, and “Binibining Cebu,” one of the country’s biggest pageants. All of the proceeds from these events go to charity or sustainable projects such as medical missions and livelihood programs, schoolhouses and homes, Malasakit Centers, and relief operations for calamity-stricken areas.
“This year, as previously announced, our advocacy of promoting Visayan culture will be further strengthened through music. We thought the best way to do this is to continue the legacy of Vispop, a songwriting competition that has been inactive for almost two years. However, after holding collaborative discussions with stakeholders and numerous industry professionals, and to make it more inclusive to other genres, we have decided that the best way to move forward is to start fresh with our own endeavour instead. Thus, we will launch the Visayan Music Awards,” announced the batch.
The “Visayan Music Awards” or “VizMA” is an event to recognize songwriters, composers, producers, musicians and other key players who have greatly contributed to the Visayan music industry. It aims to build, grow and nurture a community of artists across the Visayas and Mindanao regions.
“We hope this will evolve into what we envision to be the biggest platform for songwriters and musicians to hone their craft,” the batch further shared.
The Songwriting Competition of the VizMA will have a Board of Advisers composed of industry professionals from different regions to make sure the rights of the songwriters are respected and protected, the songs are well promoted, and the standards of the competition are established and maintained.
“In the hopes of making the campaign global, we will accept not just songs written pre-dominantly in the Visayan language but also those in English with context geared toward the promotion of the Visayan region—food, places, people, and the like. The competition will also embrace all genres from pop, rock, R&B, reggae, hip-hop to country, soul, and folk among others. We are committing ourselves to the advocacy we started in 2011 of supporting Cebu and the Visayas region, its people, music, arts, beauty, culture, and heritage. We invite and encourage those in the music industry and the entire Visayas and Mindanao regions to join us in supporting this cause.”
Submission of entries will be until May 31. For submissions, visit www.visayanmusicawards.com or check out www.facebook.com/visayanmusicawards or @visayanmusicawards on Instagram. All entries submitted to visayanpop.com will be carried over to the new competition.
The Finals Night will be on July 27 at the Oakridge Pavilion. Join now for a chance to win P100,000 and to have your music heard all over the world.
