Zamboanga to extract, filter water from bog lake to augment supply

THE Zamboanga City Government is ready to extract and filter water from the bog lake in San Roque using a mobile filtration machine to augment the supply of the Zamboanga City Water District (ZCWD).

Elmeir Jade Apolinario, City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office head, said the machine arrived last April 1 from Tacloban City through the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) regional offices in Zamboanga Peninsula and Davao.

Apolinario said the mobile filtration machine can draw potable water up to 3,000 liters per hour with a maximum operation of eight hours a day.

The ZCWD is currently implementing a water rationing scheme due to low supply brought about by the prolonged dry spell caused by a weak El Niño phenomenon.

The utility said filtered water from the bog lake passed the turbidity test although a final bacteriological test has yet to be conducted.

Extraction and filtration will proceed once the test results are found to be favorable.

The process is to store the bog lake water in the tanks of the CDRRMO from which the water will be injected into the pipe system in elevated areas to boost the water supply.
