YouthWorks PH seeks out-of-school applicants

THE youth training and employment project, YouthWorks PH, is now accepting out-of-school youth and high school graduates who are not in school, employment or training (NEET) to become a part of its work-based training program.

The accepted applicants will be the first batch of students and Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (Tesda) scholars in the Cagayan de Oro Technical Vocation Institute (CDO-TVI) construction programs offered under YouthWorks PH.

"Nag launch na tayo ngayon, first time sa buong bansa, yung ating work-based training program dito sa Cagayan de Oro," Karol Mark Yee, chief of party of YouthWorks PH, said.

The first part of the work-based training program, according to Yee, is composed of life skills and basic construction training in CDO-TVI. This will be followed by hands-on training under the Oro Geometric Builders Inc. (OGBI).

"We are ready to train youth NEET and then afterwards, hopefully, pag good yung performance nila they can also be employed fulltime by OGBI," Yee said.

John Michael Seno, SK Federation president in Cagayan de Oro City, who was one of the speakers during the YouthWorks PH's orientation last Monday, April 8, was delighted that there exists a program that can help the out-of-school youth in the city.

"Sa akong tan-aw, nalipay kaayo ko og naay susama nga ing ani nga mga programa diin nga ang mga kabatan-onan nato na pay panahon para lugar maka income sa umaabot nga panahon, dili lang sa ilang pag eskwela, dili lang ma develop ang ilang kaugalingon, kun dili maka income pa sila while gaeskwela sila," Seno said.

The work-based training program combines theory and practical learning.

Under the program, the youth learn by doing both in the school and in the company where they receive a stipend of at least 75 percent of the minimum wage in Cagayan de Oro.

YouthWorks PH is hoping that this program will positively impact on the lives of some 40,000 NEET youth across the Philippines.

From Cagayan de Oro, YouthWorks PH will hold a series of recruitment activities in Manila, Cebu, Zamboanga, Iloilo, General Santos, and Davao.

"Our hope is to reach, train, and place Filipino youth in industries like construction, energy, hospitality and tourism, and manufacturing. There is an abundance of middle-skill jobs in these sectors - those in need of technicians, sales agents, food service managers and chefs, or IT support specialists. And in the case of CDO, construction jobs like wielders and machine operators," Yee said.

"These types of jobs would help our youth participate in the economy," he added.

The work-based training program is expected to garner 50 students or more whose training will span for three months.

For those who were not able to attend the orientation, interested NEET and out-of-school youth can still apply by messaging YouthWorks PH on their Facebook page. They will be accepting applicants until the end of this week.
