Abu Sayyaf killed, 2 soldiers hurt in firefight

A MEMBER of the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) was killed while two soldiers were wounded in a firefight as the military continues its offensive against the bandits in Sulu, the military said Thursday, April 11.

Colonel Gerry Besana, Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom) information officer, said the firefight broke out at 10:37 a.m. Thursday at Sitio Bud Taming in Panglayahan village, Patikul, Sulu.

Besana said the troops of the Army’s 32nd Infantry Battalion under Lieutenant Colonel Ronaldo Mateo were on combat operation when they chanced upon some 100 bandits under Abu Sayyaf leader Radullan Sahiron, thus, the firefight ensued.

He said the firefight, which lasted for about 40 minutes, resulted in the death of an Abu Sayyaf bandit and two soldiers injured.

The Sahiron-led Abu Sayyaf bandits withdrew towards southwest direction from the site of the clash. Troops are pursuing them.

The Joint Task Force Sulu continue its offensive against the Abu Sayyaf bandits, who are still holding captives more than five people, including foreigners. (Bong Garcia/SunStar Philippines)>/b>
