HANDLING a huge population with limited manpower to secure every inch of the area of responsibility poses quite a challenge to law enforcers.

Extra challenging is keeping the children in conflict with the law (CICL) and the out of school youth away from further danger.

The Talomo Philippine National Police Advisory Council in Davao City created a sports fest which they launched last April 7, at Emar Human Environmental College in Davao City to preoccupy the youth with sports.

From the brainchild of the Police Strategy Management Unit of the Talomo Police Station in partnership with the Advisory Council chaired by Ma. Lita Montalban, the sports fest will be hosting around 300 CICL and out of school youth from all the barangays of Talomo District.

Montalban pointed out that with summer at hand, the youth must be preoccupied with sports and other activities to keep them away from drugs and harmful acts at the same time promote unity and camaraderie with fellow youth from other barangays.

“We launched a sports fest as an avenue to showcase their strength and as a form of release for the youth,” Montalban said.

Moreover, Talomo Police Station Commander Roland Lao encouraged the participants not to lose hope even after committing mistakes early in life because he also experienced hardships as a newbie cop back in the day but strived hard and rose to the ranks of a station commander.

“If someone will drag you to commit a crime, never go with them because it will ruin your life. Always bring with you patience and determination and you will finish your education. We are all proud of you. You have Ma’am Lita Montalban and the Advisory Council behind you helping and guiding you for a better life,” Lao said.

Taking place every weekend, venues will hop from one barangay to another; the council also will reward the Most Behave Team, Complete Attendance, Most Respectful, Most Valuable Player and many more to encourage them to give their best during the course of the fest.

Aside from playing basketball, volleyball, and futsal, the top performing individuals will also be eyed to be trained to represent Talomo PNP in future leagues.

Indeed, sports is a powerful tool to unite, transform, and lead the youth to a healthier and competitive life away from the shadows of drugs and crime. As children are one of the most vulnerable sectors of the society, Talomo PNP Advisory Council in Davao City, together with the support of the government, explores multiple avenues to lead the youth and reduce CICL-related crimes in Talomo and in the city.
