Ex-girlfriends key to barista’s killer: police

POLICE are looking into a romantic angle in the shooting of a champion barista and three of his staff on Wednesday, April 10, in Cebu City.

Abellana police station chief P/Maj. Eduardo Sanchez said they have identified persons of interest who can help unlock the puzzle of the deaths of John Michael Hermoso, 29 -year-old managing partner of The Good Cup Coffee Company, and cashier Kis Katy Ramos, 21.

Two other employees of The Good Cup Coffee Company, Sherwin Rivera, 23, and Jerome Amada, 21, were also shot. They remain in the hospital.

Sanchez said Hermoso had three previous girlfriends, and police are exploring whether their past relationships with him had anything to do with his death.

He said police are looking into the motive of Hermoso’s killing that dragged three people in.

By digging up Hermoso’s past relationships, police investigators will know the reason behind “nganong grabe ang kasuko sa suspek (the intense rage of the suspect),” Sanchez said.

How they came up with the romantic angle Sanchez did not say.

Hermoso was good-looking and had colored tattoos on his arms. He was the Philippine representative to the 2019 World Coffee Championships in Boston, Massachusetts scheduled this month. He was the champion in the Philippine Brewer’s Cup held last month.

He and his staff were closing the coffee shop located on Ranudo St., Barangay Cogon Ramos, Cebu City at past 10 p.m. when a man calmly walked up to the shop and shot all four of them.

Hermoso died on the spot. Ramos was rushed to the nearby Velez Hospital but did not make it alive. Amada is in critical condition, and there has been no word on Rivera’s condition.

Footage from the closed circuit television (CCTV) showed two men standing outside the coffee shop.

One of them seemed to be a worker at the coffee shop and was waiting for someone from inside.

Then a man wearing a full-faced helmet arrived and shot the people inside the coffee shop. He left an opened can of test smoke to veil his identity and ran towards the motorcycle that had waited for him.

Based on the CCTV footage, the gunman was left-handed, adept at handling a gun and a professional, Sanchez said.

The gunman hit Hermoso and Ramos twice each and Rivera and Amada, once each.

Hermoso was shot twice in the body, and many of his internal organs were compromised.

Ramos, the cashier, was shot in the head. She was graduating at the University of the Philippines Cebu.

At Cebu City Hall, Councilor Joel Garganera condemned the killings and requested the Cebu City police to speed up their investigation and arrest the perpetrators.

Garganera is chairman of the Cebu City Police Advisory Council. (MPS from reports of AYB & PAC of SuperBalita Cebu)
