Holy Week Practices

THE Lenten Season is when Filipinos devote a week to reflect on and remember the Passion and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Every year, a lot of us have different things to do in observance of the Holy Week—some even practice their own traditions. With Lent falling on the start of the summer season, many spend the holiday as a means to get a nice vacation—such as going to the beach to beat the scorching heat. While some may take advantage of the holiday, others visit different churches and pray. Most people fast as a way of showing sacrifice for Lent. What I usually anticipate every year is my mom’s “Binignit” which I can only exclusively indulge in during Holy Week! I asked some of our Zup! readers what they will be doing during their Holy Week, and here are their answers.

“Our usual plans on Holy Week are to prepare food such as ‘binignit’ or ‘biko’ and as a family, we traditionally go hiking for the Stations of the Cross. We also watch movies about Jesus like ‘The Passion of the Christ.’” —Necolla Camacho, 21, Freelance Tour Guide

“Well, what we usually do on Holy Week is to stay at home enjoying the free time, while we eat those Holy Week delicacies like ‘biko’ and ‘binignit’ that my mom prepares. Also, we go to church together or sometimes, go to the beach.” —Cleo Cartagena, 20, Customer Service Representative

“I never experienced a Holy Week without my mom’s ‘binignit’ or my aunt’s ‘biko.’ It has become a family tradition. We also go to different churches for the ‘Visita Iglesia’ and pray in every church we visit as a way to reflect on ourselves.” —Princess Rica Mae Cortes, 16, Senior High School student
