Cortez: Holy Week reflection

HOW much is life worth? Invaluable. For what or for whom are we willing to exchange it for? For many, the answer will probably be none or nobody.

Yet we know that even before we were born - some 2,000 years ago – someone offered his life for us. Not because we asked for it but because he decided to freely do so. And not because we deserved it but because he simply loved us more than anyone, including our very own selves, could ever love us.

This Holy Week we remember that amazing love. We once again bring to mind the all-popular verse, “For God so loved the world that He gave his only begotten Son, so that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have everlasting life(John 3:16).”

Jesus, the Son of God, humbled himself to become like us in everything except sin. He did not commit any wrongdoing, yet he bore in his body the entire penalty due us for our own wickedness. For our sake he suffered untold pain at the hands of his torturers, culminating in gruesome death by crucifixion on the cross – all because of you and me.

At Calvary, God’s justice intertwined with God’s love. By dying on the cross, Jesus satisfied the requirement of the holy God that the penalty of sin is death; yet by the same sacrifice he offered mercy to all of us – the mercy to be saved from the death we all deserve by believing in him and trusting in his grace as we follow and obey him.

This Holy Week and beyond, may we not treat God’s grace as cheap grace.

It took no less than the innocent blood of the Son of God to put us right with God. Let not our faith in him be not by mere words but by deeds. Let our repentance be genuine – one that does not stop with a prayer for forgiveness, but continues with a firm resolve and conviction to fight evil and do good. Unlike the fig tree that Jesus wanted cut for not bearing fruit, let us strive to produce fruits of good works.

Our walk with the Lord is as necessary everyday as it is during the Holy Week. The journey will not always be easy, but let us remember that Jesus’ crucifixion and burial were followed by his resurrection and ascension. We know the verdict: “Jesus won,” and so shall we.
