Caluag sees adaptive practices as answer to climate change

CITY of San Fernando mayoralty candidate Vilma Caluag sees adaptive practices as the solution to the continuing effects of climate change, particularly among farmers.

Asked on how she can effectively address the issue of climate change in the city during a candidates’ forum in this capital city, Caluag immediately took in the effects of changing weather patterns on farmers and the flooding problems in the city.

“Kailangan po natin ng mas matitibay na binhi para sa magsasaka. Kailangan din nating magtanim ng mas marami pang puno,” Caluag said, stressing that stronger seeds that can withstand adverse weather conditions can enable farmers to cope during floodings and prolonged dry spells.

Caluag said she would continue to initiate more planting activities in this city if given a chance to serve as mayor. Adaptive practices would enable sectors here, not just the farmers, to hurdle the adverse effects of climate change, she said.

Caluag added that there is also the growing need to get farmers acquainted with changing weather conditions to level up their preparations.

The effects of climate change have become hurdles in the regular farm cycles as unprecedented amounts of rainfall and severe dry weather conditions seem to become the norms rather than the exceptions, she said.

She also hopes that farmers would be given enough orientation on how to use these varieties and other climate change adaptive technologies to cushion the impacts of climate change on the agriculture sector which, undoubtedly, is among the most vulnerable sectors.

Caluag added that coordination with government line agencies as well as non-government groups is also essential in ensuring that climate change adaptive initiatives are fully understood by all sectors of the city.
