Addressing Cebu City’s water shortage

THE Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office will use 27 fire trucks and water tanks of different barangays, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) 7 and the Metropolitan Cebu Water District (MCWD) to distribute water to areas affected by the water shortage.

Some 47 areas have little or no access to running water, including Banawa, Capitol Site, Sta. Cruz, Sambag 1 and 2, Kamputhaw, Mambaling, Kinasang-an and Inayawan, among others.

Affected barangays have been rationing water to residents, said Wesley Vincent Yñigo, operations chief of the disaster office.

Last Friday, April 12, the City Council placed the city under a state of calamity due to the effects of the El Niño.

The City can use at least P27.5 million in its calamity fund to assist those affected by the dry spell.

Yñigo said they will meet with the BFP, MCWD and Councilor Dave Tumulak to discuss their ongoing response to the water problem.

“Possible agenda during the meeting will be the identification of water hydrants with strong pressure of water so fire trucks can get supply there,” Yñigo said. RVC
