VISITING female bowler Nelia Santos ruled the seniors division in the first ever Seaside Tenpin Bowling Association Inc. (STBAI) National Open Bowling Championships at the SM City Seaside Bowling Center last Saturday, April 13.

Santos of Pasig Bowling Association (PBA) outplayed her male and female counterparts for the seniors crown after scoring a total of 1,785 in the eight-game series.

The tournament organized by STBAI, a newly formed bowling association in Cebu, attracted close to 100 bowlers from different parts of the country.

Renato Reyes of the Cebu Tenpin Bowling Association (Cetba) finished 33 pins behind Santos to take second place.

Viloria Celis of STBAI scored 1,721 for third place, visiting player Ronnie Javier of ITBA-Imus had 1,720 to take fourth place, and female bowler Inday Aguilar of Cetba rounded up the top five with 1,680.

Santos, a 35-handicapper, knocked down a pair of 205s in the first and fifth games to gain some momentum. She also had a couple of 204s in the fourth and eighth games to go along with 162, 166, 170 and 189.

The 24-handicapper Reyes had a last ditch rally, scoring over 200 in the last three games with 255, 203 and 234, respectively, but it was not enough to catch up with Santos. Reyes had 179, 157, 127, 200 and 205 in the first to fifth games.

STBAI president Dante Calipay said the six-day tournament was the first major event for the bowling association, which was created to cater to the bowlers from the southern side of Cebu.

Calipay said the group started as the 55AB Bowlers for players aged 55 above before they created the STBAI in the last quarter of 2018.

“Most of our members are from the south of Cebu. This is our first event and we are looking to host more local and national events with our venue here,” he said.

The rest of the top 10 finishers are Romy Serrano of DATBA (1,674), Nestor Ranido of Stbai (1,670), Francis De Leon of MTBA-Gruppo (1,664), Manny Bueno of Stbai (1,663) and Ed Santos of PBA (1,661).

The premiere open division was being played at press time. (RSC)
