Strong start lifts Tuburan vs. Mingla

TUBURAN rode on a first half explosion to roll past Minglanilla Archangels, 88-73, in the playoff round of the 2019 Governor’s Cup Inter-Cities/Municipalities Basketball Tournament at the Tabuelan Municipal Gym on Sunday, April 14.

Tuburan notched its second win in as many games, making it one of the only two spotless teams in Bracket B. The other undefeated team in their bracket is defending overall champion Talisay City Aquastars, which has a 2-0 (win-loss) record.

Joyce Lee Oropiano exploded for a game-high 33 points. He had 18 in the first half when Tuburan made a telling run that put them ahead by double figures, 49-34, at the half.

Miguelito Jusay had a big night as well, pouring in 12 of his 26 points in the opening quarter to help Tuburan build a 25-15 lead going to the second quarter.

Tuburan did not let down in the second half en route to a 15-point win.

Talisay City slammed Consolacion, 72-55, for its second win in the second round of the tournament organized by Cebu Provincial Sports Commission for grassroots players aged 21 and below.

Kendrick Abarquez scored 15 points, Keaton Clyde Taburnal added 14 and Clark Louis Ruedas handed 12.

Behind Tuburan and Talisay City in the Bracket B standings are Minglanilla and Consolacion, which both have a 2-1 slate followed by Tabuelan with a 1-2 card. Alegria and Sogod remain winless.

Home team Tabuelan defeated Sogod, 97-79, to get its first win in the second round. Jansher Salubre gathered 34 points, John Dave Arnado chipped in 21 and Biencenido Espanol contributed 17 for the winning team.

On the other hand, Mandaue City downed the home team Medellin, 83-76, at the Medellin Municipal Gym, to take the solo lead in the Bracket A with a 3-0 card.

Gabriel George Cometa continued to play at a high level as he lifted Mandaue City with 27 points. Kenneth Jove Brillo, who exploded for 36 points the other game, had another solid performance with 21 points.

Medellin dropped to second place with a 2-1 record.

In the other games, Samboan (1-2) clawed Dumanjug (0-2), 88-82, while Balamban (2-1) escaped Argao (1-1), 96-91. (RSC)
