A HUNDRED of classic and modern cars and truck enthusiasts gathered in Talisay City on April 12 to 14 for a national competition dubbed as Autocon (Auto Convention) Year 2.

James Deakin, a multi-awarded automobile journalist of CNN Philippines came to grace the event.

Peewii Ibanez, Autocon production manager said this is a display of the best cars and audio in Negros, Cebu and Iloilo.

"This is more of a lifestyle, promoting what Bacolod offers in terms of restoration of classic cars, accessorizing trucks and audio set-up. We are showing Visayas that Bacolod is one of the richest and coolest in terms of car enthusiasts," he said.

In a year, three to four car shows are held in the city.

This hobby is an expensive one. Classic car lovers who have a penchant for restoring old cars in the 70's were able to maintain their cars' mechanical condition, interior (upholstery) and exterior appearance and audio set-up.

Ryan Saez, head organizer of Headrush Events Media said, "this is the biggest outdoor summer auto show in the Negros island from old school to modern cars.”

This is a perfect platform for car enthusiasts like hobbyists, collectors, car shops and businesses for them to showcase their audio set-up, racks and collections.

Meanwhile, Bacolod Volkswagen group led by Dr. Carlos Legislador also gathered his 15 members, with the likes of broadcaster and classic car collectors Franklin Villanueva and Engineer Ervin Diaz, to join the competition.

Legislador said people have maintained an interest in classic Volkswagen cars like Brazilla, Beetle, Buggy and Kombi and “we have those classic cars owned by our members.”

Franklin Villanueva, Volkswagen classic car collector, said his entry was a fully restored Brazilla and with a best car audio set-up on top of its engine.

He calls her "Maldita" and was the Best Volkswagen top awardee and Autocon fan favorite awardee.

Engineer Diaz who owns a 1969 Volkswagen said he takes care of his classic car like his own wife.

"Well loved and well maintained. I bought it in 1975, but a brand new 1969 Volkswagen. Up to now, my classic car is still in its best form and performance. It is also a multi-awarded car," he said. (CNC)
