Attachés urged to promote sports events in Region 7

THE Department of Tourism (DOT) 7 is planning to tap the country’s tourism attachés overseas for the promotion of sports activities in Central Visayas.

DOT 7 Director Shahlimar Tamano said he will initially coordinate with the tourism attachés in Asia to help attract sports enthusiasts to participate in the different sports activities in the region.

“We have DOT offices in Asia that we can invite so they could help send athletes,” said Tamano.

The DOT 7 is pushing for the promotion of Central Visayas as the country’s sports tourism hub. The agency earlier facilitated the creation of a sports tourism committee in the region.

During the council’s first meeting in March, various sports groups in the region had registered all of their sports activities for the whole year of 2019.

According to Tamano, the tourism players are eyeing to capture two types of markets for sports tourism—the active and passive guests.

Active guests are the athletes themselves while the passive guests are the families and friends of the athletes and the spectators of the sporting events.

Amplifying sports activities can improve the image of Central Visayas as a destination, said Tamano.

He noted that the industry players want the region to be known for more than just being a destination for business and leisure, but also a sporting haven.

Tamano said they eye to attract potential competitors from Southeast Asia, as well as from China, Japan and South Korea to join the games the industry players will stage this year.

“Right now, the competitors we attract are from the traditional markets or the same pool from five years ago,” he said.

The United Nations World Tourism Organization said sports tourism is a $600-billion market that is expected to expand by an average of 5.3 percent annually.

It is projected to grow 6.1 percent from 2013 to 2020, and by 4.7 percent from 2020 to 2030.

Charles Lim, founder and chairman of Philippine Sports Tourism Awards, said an international sports tourism conference will be mounted in Cebu in the third quarter this year.

The two-day event will be attended by sports event organizers all over Asia. (KOC)
