Comelec to take down online pol ads on Maundy Thursday, Good Friday

POLITICAL advertisements in websites and on social media during Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, April 18 and 19, will not be spared from the close monitoring of the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

Comelec spokesman James Jimenez said they will make sure that such political advertisements appearing during prohibited days of campaigning will be taken down immediately.

“We’ve already spoken to social media platforms about Maundy Thursday and Good Friday for these days be considered as blackout days,” Jimenez said.

“This means there will be an expedited process for take down of political content,” he added.

Aside from being taken down immediately, he assured that candidates behind the political advertisements will be held liable.

“Theoretically, just one political advertisement is already an election offense because it is prohibited,” said Jimenez.

Under the law, the commission may prohibit campaigning activities during Maundy Thursday and Good Friday.

Jimenez urged the public to help them flag down campaign advertisements being shown online during Maundy Thursday and Good Friday.

“The best way to report online advertisement is through online as well... to the Comelec, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter,” he said. (HDT/SunStar Philippines)
