2 jail guards, 1 civilian shot dead in Leyte

RIDING-IN-TANDEM gunmen shot dead two provincial jail guards and a tricyle driver in Villaba, Leyte Tuesday, April 16.

Responding police from Villaba Municipal Police Station identified the victims as Leo Gonzales and Genises Piamonte, both personnel of Palompon Sub-Provincial Jail in Palompon, Leyte.

The tricycle driver was identified as Jay-R Escoton, a resident of Mabini St. in Palompon.

Authorities said the shooting incident happened around 4:30 p.m. in Barangay Tagbubunga, Villaba while the two jail guards, along with the five detainees, were on their way back to Palompon Sub-Provincial Jail onboard a tricycle.

Police said the gunmen, on board another motorcycle and wearing jacket and helmet, suddenly appeared and shot the victims in the different parts of their bodies, resulting in their instantaneous death.

The driver of the tricycle was rushed to Palompon District Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival by the attending doctor.

The five detainees of Palompon Sub-Provincial Jail were unharmed and are now in the custody of the sub-provincial jail.

Police are still conducting follow-up investigation. (SunStar Philippines)
