AN IMPROVISED explosive device (IED) killed a nine-year-old child in Las Navas, Northern Samar Wednesday, April 17.

The 20th Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army based in the said town said the explosion happened at 9:45 a.m. in Barangay San Miguel.

The incident occurred when suspected rebels “harassed the troops of this unit in a temporary patrol base of said barangay,” according to the army.

The child was identified as Armando Remolde, a resident of the barangay.

“Our personnel trained on combat life saver tried to revive the victim but to no avail,” added the army battalion.

In a statement, the army condemned “the atrocities” perpetrated by suspected rebels.

“We will exert our efforts in coordination with the Philippine National Police to bring the perpetrators into justice,” it said.

As of Wednesday, no group has come forward to own up the said bombing. (SunStar Philippines)
