Valley fetes women leaders for a day

AT LEAST 34 women were given the opportunity to serve in different offices in La Trinidad, Benguet for one day.

On April 16, Vice Mayor Joey Marrero together with the municipal council and department heads pinned sash to the different Woman Official For A Day (Wofad).

Acting officials for the day were Mayor Josephine Leon, Wofad Vice Mayor Juanita Villena, Wofad Councilors include Marilyn Sanchez, Elizabeth Busento, Jean Dorado, Soline Tovera, Gloria Agasen, Marilyn Olitoquit, Flordelina Felix, Marcia Miles, Paulita Magcelo, Janet Laplana and Jessica Laruan.

The creation of Wofad was proposed to the Sangguniang Bayan of La Trinidad in 2018.

With the theme “We make change, work for women”, Leon said being an official for a day enables them to learn from the different offices of the local government unit.

La Trinidad is the second municipality in Benguet to enact WOFAD ordinance next to Tuba.

“Women are part of nation building. We believe that we can contribute to the community,” added Leon.

The activity was based on the recently passed municipal ordinance no.35-2018 entitled prescribing guidelines on the implementation of Women Officials for a Day (Wofad) celebrated very March in lieu of the Women’s Month.

Under the ordinance, an honorarium of P2,000 and certificates will be awarded to Wofad officials at the end of the day.

A Wofad committee chaired by the Municipal Welfare and Development Office was created for this purpose.

“Filipino women have continued to play a critical economic, cultural, political, and social role by constituting a significant portion of working inside and outside of the home,” the ordinance added.

Marrero added resolution and ordinance passed on first reading by Wofad will be referred to the different Municipal Council committees for appropriate action or legislative action.
