Masbad: 10th Gen Intel: Is it worth it?

AS WITH all other tech-related questions, it’s a yes and no answer.

If you’re a straight up gamer sporting Team Blue all the way and only use your PC for nothing else but game, then all the benchmarks I’ve seen made by individuals around YouTube land will definitely affirm your decision to splurge on the new processors. That is if you can actually get your hands on one. More on that later.

Back to benchmarks. And speaking of which, here are a couple from YouTube channel, Paul’s Hardware. These will get really geeky so prepare to dive into numbers here.

Here’s his review on the i9-10900K:

And here’s his review (and comparo) on the i5-10600K:

Unfortunately, Paul still doesn’t have a video on the i7. So, for that, I’ll share with you this video from Hardware Unboxed.

So, my thoughts? I’d still go with AMD’s offerings.

Yes, the common thing on those benchmarks is that Intel beats AMD in pretty much all of the single-core benchmarking scores which are normally related to gaming. Once we start talking about productivity applications like video editing, photo editing and others, the performance numbers by both teams are not far from each other. And with that in mind, it only is so much more harder to ignore AMD’s pricing. The Ryzen processors, for me, pack so much more value for money than the Intel ones. One can easily build a multi-purpose PC setup based on a Ryzen processor that will not break the P25,000 budget.

If you’re a die-hard Intel fan, you’ll probably be finding a way to put out a counter argument. And that’s okay. Let’s agree to disagree.

But if we all step back for a moment and realize that we all don’t have that much spare cash to throw around just so we can buy the latest and greatest from Intel. Oh, and I already mentioned about getting your hands on one. That’s right. It seems that the supply for these 10th gen chips are very limited. Not every distributor, dealer, store has enough stocks (or none at all) to sell to everyone who wants one. And we all know what happens when there’s a big demand for something that’s lacking in supply, right? You got that right, prices skyrocket.

By the way, AMD recently slashed its prices for the Ryzen 9 3900x. Gear in Stock’s tracker for the i9-10900K shows that the cheapest price is at USD529. The Ryzen 9 3900x is just USD432 on Newegg.com. That USD97 discount on the AMD chip compared to the Intel translates to more cores and threads. If your budget is restricted in some way or another, it’s an easy decision to make if you ask me.

Anyway, I digress.

Back to the original question. And the answer was yes and no.

Yes if you want a processor that can definitely demolish AMD in the single-core performance and also if your PC rig is dedicated to nothing but gaming.

No if you’re a jack-of-all-trades kind of person. You game, you stream, you edit photos and videos, you create visual effects, you code, you transcode. You get the idea.

In the end, it will still be all up to you to answer the question about the 10th Gen Intel processors be worth the money or not.
