BCM chess tournament set

WOOD pushers from around the country will once again battle it out for prizes as the 13th Baguio Center Mall Non-masters Chess tournament ‘Panangbenga Cup’ tilt opens March 6 and 7.

Two divisions will be played in the tournament arranged by Baguio Center Mall supported by other mall tenants with cash prizes and trophies awaiting winners to be held at the Chess Gallery, 4th floor BCM.

Finest chess players in the country are anticipated to square off in the open division to clinch for the top prize of P7,000 with trophy also the second placer bringing home P5,000 and trophy.

The third placer will receive P3,000 plus trophy, while the fourth to sixth placers gets P1,000, P800, and P500.

A P5,000 cash prize and a trophy await the top winner in the kiddies division, while trophies and cash prizes of P3,000 and P1,500 will be given to second and third placers. Prizes for the fourth to sixth placers are P1,000, P800, and P500.

Trophies also await the special awardees for top junior, top lady and top senior, while top nine kiddies player will receive P300.

Registration will be until March 3 with fees pegged at P150 for the open division (13 years old and above) and kiddies division (12 years and below). A P250 registration fee will be charged for late registration for the open division with P250 for the Kiddies division.

Arnie Ignacio, the tournament director sees this competition as an avenue for molding skills especially for the children.

“Ninanais din naming silang malayo sa masasamang bisyo,” he added and proudly described Haridas Pascua a high school student of University of Baguio, who bagged a national title already, was a product of this quarterly chess challenge.
