Zamboanga City remembers ‘Mam Caling’

THE Zamboanga City Government will spearhead activities commemorating the 98th birth anniversary of Mayor Maria Clara “Mam Caling” Lobregat, the first lady chief executive, on Friday, April 26.

The commemoration will kick off with a mass at 6 a.m. at the Holy Trinity Parish in Pasonanca village.

It will be followed by the wreath laying rite and subsequently the program at the Jardin Maria Clara or Butterfly Garden also in Pasonanca.

Now on its 13th year since the enactment of Ordinance 278 in 2006, the “Dia de Mam Caling” is a fitting celebration marking Mrs. Lobregat’s birthday every year on April 26.

Her death anniversary, which falls on January 2, is also part of the city government’s calendar of activities, in recognition of all her contributions to the city of Zamboanga.

Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco-Salazar will lead the different activities that will be graced by the Lobregat family led by District 1 Representative Celso Lobregat.

“Mam Caling” served Zamboanga City as mayor from July 1, 1998 until her demise on January 2, 2004. (Bong Garcia/SunStar Philippines)
