Deita: Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod: My school, my home

School is an institution designed for the teaching of students under the direction of teachers. (https://www.definitions.net/definition/school).

Home means an enjoyable, happy place where you can live, laugh and learn. It’s somewhere where you are loved, respected, and cared for. When you look at it from the outside, home is just a house, a building, maybe a yard. But on the inside, it’s a lot more than wood and bricks (Wynn, 2009).

You might be wondering why I had written the definitions of school and home. What is the connection? Can a school be a home and a home be a school? Is it possible? My answer is a resounding YES! I found my school and my home rolled into one with my alma mater; Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod.

I could still vividly recall the time when I entered the portals of CSA-B as a freshman college student in 1995, I could hardy speak Hiligaynon because I came from the city of golden friendship, Cagayan de Oro. Yet, upon entering the campus I immediately felt the vivacity of the environment. I felt at home that right there and then I immediately enrolled myself.

Rarely do I see myself bored with my studies because the people I met in CSA-B like the teachers, students, staff and even administrators made me feel special that I even came to realize that I was already participating in the activities like the literary-musical contest, sports fest, acting on stage and even competing in the Negros Occidental Private Schools, Sports, Cultural, Educational Association (NOPSSCEA) contest. Furthermore, the sense of responsibility, dedication to study, and humility in serving others were inculcated to me when I joined the student government.

The love and support that I usually experience at home I also felt in school. The school does not only strengthen a person but it also supports the talents, skills, generosity and intelligence of the students.

Talents, in the sense that the school has given the students the chance to showcase their talents through its famous velada. Skills, because the school provides the students the opportunity to be trained in high caliber and quality standard institutions for their internships.

Generosity, because the school teaches students and teachers to be generous by reaching out to our brethren who are less fortunate through its outreach programs. And lastly, intelligence, because of the mind boggling term exams that make students become braver and confident in facing their board exams. It is for a reason that the school only wants the best for the students, in fact the Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (Paascu) granted the level II accredited status in the majority of our academic programs. This is because CSA-B is true to its vision and that is an Augustinian academic and evangelizing community providing quality Filipino and Christian Catholic education; and its mission as a Catholic, Filipino, Augustinian school committed to fulfilling the mission of the Church by providing a well-rounded formation of the human person with respect to his ultimate goal; by developing moral and social values and love for country; and by fostering a community life characterized by oneness of mind and heart on the way to God, anchored on the Augustinian motto "Virtus et Scientia".

It may seem impossible but a school can also be your home. How? Remember the famous passage from St. Augustine’s Confessions which says, “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you.”
