PROMOTING sustainable and zero waste lifestyle in Cagayan de Oro City highlights this year’s celebration of Earth Week.

From April 22 until 27, 10 to 15 businesses and social enterprises displayed their sustainable and organic products through a trade fair at the ground floor, near the entrance, of Centrio Ayala Mall.

These businesses include: Happy Earth Store, Sanicare, 180 Degrees Celcius by Josephine’s, Sabon Lokal, fresh fruits and vegetables from the merchants in Lane 101, and others.

Non-government organizations such as Modern Nanays of Mindanao, JCI Kagayhaan Gold, Eco Art Farm by Lihuk, and Make Sense CDO, who spearheaded the event, also have their own booths during the trade fair.

“Hopefully, maka raise og awareness sa mga Kagaya-anons and neighboring cities and municipalities na we have these such products or businesses, social enterprises na ga practice na og sustainability and zero waste lifestyle,” Joan Merced-Sheng, Lihuk secretary, said.

Mall shoppers, goers and clients are encouraged to bring reusable materials such as tumblers, mugs, containers, eco bags, and even utensils when purchasing products from local providers during the fair.

Apart from the trade fair, the event will also feature several workshops held in the afternoon, namely: Soap Making by SB Naturals and Healing Balm and Essential Oils by Blessed Potions on April 23; DIY Beeswax Wrap by Mindyourbeesknees and Magtahi ta! by UTSP TLE Department on April 24; Urban Gardening and Composting by City Local Environment and Natural Resources (Clenro) and Ecobrick Making by Lihuk and Ecobricks CDO on April 25; and Green Parenting by Modern Nanays of Mindanao on April 27.

“Through this event, the Earth Week 2019 celebration, the trade fair, we send the message to all Kagay-anons that we can actually minimize our waste, our use of single-used plastics. Practice the habit of having self-discipline,” Sheng said.
