Spotless Mandaue extends run

MANDAUE City just had too much firepower as it slammed Samboan, 103-84, in the second round of the Governor’s Cup Inter-Cities/Municipalities Basketball Tournament at the Argao Municipal Gym last Wednesday, April 24.

Fourteen players from Mandaue City scored at least a point in the dominating win. Kenneth Jove Brillo led the charge with 24 points, Gabriel George Cometa contributed 18, Archie Buscay canned in 17 and Dwight Kent Dabon had 10 to round up the players in double figures.

Mandaue City actually had a slow start and found itself down 16-14 at the end of the first quarter. But Mandaue City was quick to turn things around after a telling 36-21 blitz in the second quarter to pull away with a double-digit lead, 49-37, at the half.

Mandaue City did not look back from there en route to its fourth win in as many games in the playoffs, taking the solo lead in the Bracket A team standings.

John Michael France Rosal and Raphael Charles Dinampo scored 20 and 18 points, respectively, in a losing effort for Samboan, which dropped to 1-4 slate.

In Consolacion, the defending champion Talisay City Aquastars used a strong second half to sting the winless Sogod, 83-73, in the Bracket B action.

Talisay City improved to a 4-0 (win-loss) record and also gained the solo lead on their bracket, after the erstwhile unbeaten Tuburan fell to Consolacion, 90-76, in the other game.

Jay Deiparine scored most of his 25 points in the third quarter when Talisay City staged a 27-17 run to pad the lead to double figures, 64-74, going to the payoff period.

Deiparine got the needed support from Clark Louis Ruedas, Kendrick Abarquez and Keaton Clyde Taburnal, who combined for 37 points.

Consolacion, meanwhile, handed Tuburan its first loss in the playoffs. Tuburan and Consolacion share the second spot with both 3-1 cards behind Talisay City.

Brevin Keith Padayogdog finished with 20 points, Raymundo Osabel contributed 14, John Paulo Dalumpines handed 13 and Bathan added 11 for the winning team.

In the other games, Balamban (4-1) sneaked past Danao City (1-3), 90-88; Dumanjug (1-3) escaped Argao (1-3), 88-83; while the Minglanilla Archangels (3-2) demolished Alegria (1-3), 103-79. (RSC)
