Health office: No meningococcemia at detention facility

CITY health officer Dulce Miravite has allayed public fears on a possible meningococcemia outbreak at the Zamboanga City Reformatory Center (ZCRC), saying that confirmatory results of the suspected meningo case is negative.

This, after a ZCRC detainee allegedly expired at the Zamboanga City Medical Center (ZCMC) recently after exhibiting signs and symptoms of meningococcemia.

Health authorities investigated the case and submitted samples for confirmation.

“Two days ago, we were informed that the confirmatory result of the patient for meningococcemia is negative,” Miravite said.

As soon as the City Health Office found out about the suspected meningococcemia case admitted at the ZCMC last week, Miravite coordinated with the nurses at the ZCRC to give prophylaxis for the close contact of the patient in jail.

She said prophylaxis (antibiotic) were administered to all the inmates in the male and female dormitories, as well as to the close family contact of the patient.

She said that the policemen at the Police Station 5 where the patient was initially detained were also given prophylaxis.

Disinfection of cells at the ZCRC is also done, according to Miravite. (Bong Garcia/SunStar Philippines)
