TALISAY City’s Matthew Justine Hermosa bagged the silver medal in the super sprint category of the NTT ASTC Subic Bay International Triathlon at the Subic Bay Freeport on Sunday, April 28.
Hermosa of Go For Gold/TLTG finished the 400-meter swim, 10K bike and 5K run race with a total time of 35 minutes and 34 seconds to foil a Hong Kong sweep in the men’s division.
Eventual champion Nick Yip Tak Long of Hong Kong won the gold medal in 33:51, while his compatriot Jan Yip snagged the bronze medal after clocking 35:54.
Hermosa leaned on a strong performance from the bike and run portions to stay within striking distance to the Hong Kong triathletes.
He trailed more than 20 seconds after clocking 6:24 on the swim, but was able to get close with a fast 17:35 time on the bike segment and 9:34 on the run part.
Hong Kong also dominated the women’s super sprint race as Pauline Courret clocked 36:49 to beat Roxanne Wright and Lady Samantha Corpuz, who clocked 37:04 and 37:42, respectively.
In the standard distance race, Cebuano and national team member Andrew Kim Remolino placed 17th overall in the men’s division. Oscar Coggins of Hong Kong finished first followed by Japanese Jumpei Furuya and Takumi Hojo. (RSC)
