DTI, SRA urged to act on sugar price hike

LA CARLOTA CITY -- Reelectionist Senator Cynthia Villar asserts that the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) should exercise their respective functions to arrest the skyrocketing price of sugar in the market

Villar said the DTI should exercise their function to impose price control on sugar.

"There is no shortage of supply of sugar and the mill gate price is not increasing so why is the market price high? There could be a cartel in sugar,” Villar said.

She said that the resolution filed by Senatro JV Ejercito calling for an investigation into the high price of sugar could be acted by the senate after the elections.

“Maybe Senator JV would like to get the immediate attention on the urgent matter. However there's no time because it's only two weeks before the elections,” Villar pointed out.

"We don't know why it's high but there seems to be a cartel,” she lamented.

She also said that the SRA should look into the matter.

Malacañang would look into why the price is high and it could be used as a reason for sugar liberalization, she added.
