SUMMER. This is a season which a lot of people love the most!

This is definitely a great time for a beach getaway, right? However, do not rush to your favorite resort just yet. You have to make sure first that your skin and hair are protected from the harsh heat of the sun.

It is too hot right now! On Saturday, April 27, Davao City recorded a heat index of 32.4 degrees celsius. This is according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pag-asa). There were even instances in the past weeks when the city experienced higher heat indices. In short, staying under the sun for long can surely damage our skin and hair.

Here are some tips on how to take care of your gorgeous-looking skin and hair while outside enjoying summer:

Put on some protective spray or cream.

I presume you already know what a sunscreen is. But, do you know that there are two types of harmful rays that could damage our skin?

The UVA or ultraviolet A is the long wave one which gets into the thickest layer of the skin, the dermis. Meanwhile, UVB or ultraviolet B is the short wave which burns the outer layer of the skin.

In choosing a protective spray or cream, make sure that you pick the brand that works both for UVA and UVB.

Get the one with at SPF 50.

Picking the brand that offers a sun protection factor of 50 means that it is blocking 98 percent of UVB.

Choose oil-based sunscreen products.

It would be better if you choose the oil-based sunscreen products. These ones lock in moisture instead of drying up your skin. Do not ever forget that both the sun and salt can dry up your hair and skin.

Moiturize and hydrate.

Moisturize and hydrate not just after you go to the beach. Make sure that you do the same before going to your much-awaited getaway. And if your skin is hypersensitive, it is best if you use the brand that is hypoallergenic. Personally, I use organic, hydrating toner every day. I pair this with a hypoallergenic moisturizer since my skin reacts immediately to every harsh ingredient that it gets contact with.

A leave-in conditioner can protect the hair, too.

To further protect your hair from drying, look for a leave-in conditioner from your favorite shop. You may try visiting Watson’s. It has a lot to offer, by the way.

Wear protective gears.

A hat is worn other than for aesthetics reasons. You wear it to protect your hair and face from sun damage. (A pair of sunglasses can protect your eyes as well.)
