THE SM Supermarket in Bacolod City is this year's recipient of Bagwis Award, a recognition given by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to enterprises that consistently abide with the guidelines set by the agency.

DTI-Negros Occidental Provincial Director Lea Gonzales awarded the Seal of Excellence plaque to SM Supermarket of SM City Bacolod as Gold Bagwis awardee at the agency’s provincial office in Bacolod City on Friday, April 26.

Gonzales said the establishment, a previous recipient of silver Bagwis award, has passed the criteria set by the DTI including the establishment of Consumer Welfare Desk handling complaints and concerns of customers.

SM Supermarket is also implementing activities like training for its staff and personnel to better consumer services, and has no case on violation of Republic Act 7394 or the Consumer Act of the Philippines.

“Aside from these criteria, another factor that enabled the establishment to level up as gold awardee is its community service program,” she said, adding that the award gives enterprises the image of being at par in terms of consumer service and protection.

Recipients of Bagwis award are being chosen through site visitation, assessment, evaluation, and regional deliberation. It is open to all retailers like supermarkets, service centers, and repair shops.

Applicant-enterprises should abide with fair trade laws, including price tagging and labeling, comply with the guidelines of other governing agencies like Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) and Department of Labor and Employment (Dole), and conform with general set-up that requires cleanliness of the business place, among others.

Bagwis Award is also given to establishments that have been implementing corporate social responsibilities, and compliant to some elements of the ISO 9001, the agency earlier said.

Currently, SM Supermarket is the only recipient of Gold Bagwis award in Negros Occidental. Other recipient-enterprises are bronze and silver awardees.

Gonzales said they continue to urge other establishments in the province to also aim for the recognition as it will help them boost their businesses.

“We hope that the award given to SM Supermarket will motivate other retailers to also do the same, we want local department stores and even small supermarkets to also receive such recognition,” Gonzales said.

DTI-Negros Occidental continues to invite local establishments to apply by inviting their managerial staff in a briefing about the award including its requirements and procedures.

The Seal of Excellence plaque is affixed in front of the establishments. Through which, enterprises will further boost their image and reputation which can equip them in gaining more trust and confidence from the consumers.

For the consumers, it will give them the guarantee of excellent services from the recipient-establishments, she added.
