Bzzzzz: Killing of 2 cops; drinking of tap water by Kara; blame game on the drought in Metro Cebu

WOULDN'T YOU WISH TO KNOW:

* ... How one can be sure if a cop is killed by drug lords or by fellow cops: Police Corporal Feliciano Yballe was shot dead inside his home in Sudlon 2, Cebu City Tuesday, April 30. Police Master Sergeant Junard Cinco was gunned down on a motorcycle with his wife at Media Once in Toledo City on the same day.

Barangay Captain Dante Tabucal said police killed Yballe. Police eye revenge of drug traffickers in the killing of Cinco. Would the investigation tell the public? Past probes have not been informative.

* ... If MCWD publicist Charmaine Rodriguez-Kara was drinking really tap water when photographed during her appearance before the Cebu City Council Tuesday (April 30): It was water in a bottle; that's all readers can be sure about.

Like employees of soft-drink companies who are obliged to patronize only their employers' products, MCWD workers cannot be seen drinking bottled water in public. MCWD though hasn't been pushing for consumption of its product as vigorously as the soda firms have been doing.

* ... Since when have the couple Mayor Paz Radaza and former mayor-congressman Boy Radaza have begun counseling women on Facebook: Maybe just for this election, when they think exposure in social media is a must for candidates (Boy seeks to replace his wife as Lapu-Lapu City mayor and Paz wants to occupy the House seat her daughter Aileen will vacate.)

Boy's advice to a "love-starved" girl: "Pagtarong aron ikaw ang pangita-on." Paz's take: "Don't rush love. Di man ni lumba." The new skills could come in handy if the Lapu-Lapu voters would have, um, a change of heart.

Sobering facts about water

And these were brought up by, or following, the Cebu City Council session on the water problem last Tuesday:

* The problem has existed for several years, but is highlighted only during dry seasons, with this year's spell as the most critical and punishing.

* MCWD has failed for so long already to meet the obligation under its franchise. And the city officials have not bothered, or pushed hard enough, to correct the anomaly of a franchise holder getting away with its mandate for so long. Unless, of course, the terms of the franchise allow the lapse or leave it to the franchisee how much of its task it will do.

At the recent Mega Cebu forum, the mayor reportedly said he would have more "political will this" time. Consider: MCWD has been meeting only 40 percent of the needs of its consumers and even if it completes two current projects, it would raise capacity only to 80 percent.

Errors in names

A newspaper columnist's "fearless" forecast of election results in local races did not meet much disagreement. But there were errors in the names of two candidates: Aileen Radaza does not seek reelection; her mom, Mayor Paz, wants to replace her. It's not James Yap but Richard Yap who's contesting the seat of Representative Raul del Mar. The mistakes spoiled the prediction in the two matches.
